Why stump grinding in North Palm Beach is different
The tree is gone. The stump is still there. And in North Palm Beach, that stump is doing damage in ways that are easy to miss. Old stumps attract termites in South Florida’s humid coastal climate. Decaying stump roots near seawalls and canal banks can destabilize the soil zone around waterfront structures over time.
North Palm Beach’s coastal sandy soil means stump root systems in this environment decay differently than inland stumps. Near seawalls, ficus roots continue pushing into dock pilings and drainage as they decay. A rental grinder reaching 4 to 6 inches cannot remove the root mass or stop this movement. We reach 8 to 12 inches every time.

Our stump grinding process
Recent job in North Palm Beach
Ficus stump near seawall, Captain’s Key
A homeowner in Captain’s Key had a large ficus stump 6 feet from the seawall. Lateral roots had pushed under the seawall base on one side and the homeowner could see slight movement in the seawall cap. We assessed the root spread on-site before any grinding began. Ground the stump to 10 inches below grade and addressed the lateral root mass toward the seawall as far as equipment could safely reach. Pest treatment applied.

Frequently asked questions
Answered by our ISA-certified experts.
We grind 8 to 12 inches below grade. That is deep enough to prevent regrowth, eliminate the root mass, and remove the pest habitat. Rental grinders go 4 to 6 inches. Not enough to stop ficus or banyan stumps from regrowing or continuing to move near a seawall.
Yes, with proper assessment. We assess proximity to the seawall cap and canal bank edge before grinding. We position equipment on the safe side and adjust our approach when the stump is within a few feet of waterfront infrastructure.
The ordinance primarily governs tree removal. However, if your tree removal required a Village permit, the mitigation requirement may specify what happens to the stump as part of compliance. We advise on this during the removal assessment.
Not when ground to 8 to 12 inches below grade. That depth removes the root crown and prevents regrowth. Palm stumps do not regrow at all. Ficus can send up suckers if grinding depth is insufficient. We grind to the correct depth every time.
It depends on stump diameter, species, root spread, and access, especially on waterfront properties where seawall positioning matters. We give you a fair itemized quote after seeing the stump. Free assessment.
